Shipping Berries by Air from Central America and Beyond

Global demand for fresh berries is on the rise from year-round tastes for ever-popular strawberries and blueberries to growing appetites for raspberries and blackberries. Many of these berries are grown in Mexico, Guatemala and other Central American countries and shipped worldwide by air.

In the United States, consumer appetite for berries year-round and low import tariffs have driven the importing of berries from Mexico and Central America when these perishables aren’t in season here. U.S. fruit and vegetable imports have more than tripled since the 1990s with fresh citrus, strawberries and other berries among the fastest-growing types of fruit and vegetable imports, according to analysis by the Congressional Research Service.

Berries by air

Improvements in transportation and refrigeration have made it easier to ship fresh berries worldwide. Amerijet, an all-cargo carrier based in Miami, serves the berry and perishable trade from Mexico and Central America with scheduled flights as well as air charter services.

Fresh berries from the region arrive in the appropriate food-grade, temperature-controlled containers at Miami International Airport (MIA) which transit to their final destination in the U.S. or connect with flights to Europe and Asia.

At MIA, Amerijet representatives ensure berry imports are swiftly processed. The Amerijet custom-built 10,300 square-foot cooling facility maintains cool chain integrity when perishables are waiting for inspection or transfer.

A growing number of consumers are willing to pay a premium for quality which will drive the development of new and improved berry varieties. As consumer demand worldwide for fresh berries continues to grow, Amerijet will be there for importers, grocers and distributors.
